Your Child's First Visit at Sprout: How We Make It Work for Sensory-Sensitive Kids

Kid-Friendly pediatric chiropractic office in San Diego - Sprout Family Chiropractic

New places are hard for your child. New people, new sounds, new smells, a new routine. You've learned to plan ahead for every appointment: the right snack, the right toy, the right words to explain what's coming. And even then, you brace yourself.

So before you book anything, you want to know exactly what's going to happen. That makes complete sense, and this post is here to tell you.

The short answer

Your child's Initial Visit happens in two parts. Visit 1 is a conversation about your child's history, a gentle chiropractic exam, and quick, non-invasive INSiGHT nervous system scans. Visit 2 is where we walk you through what we found and recommend a plan, so you can decide what's right for your family. Throughout both, we go at your child's pace: no rushing, no forcing, and you're with them the whole time.

Before your first visit

The intake form

After you book, you'll fill out an intake form about your child. This is your chance to tell us everything we need to make the visit go well, so please don't hold back. Helpful things to share:

•      Sensory triggers: sounds, lights, textures, smells, or types of touch your child avoids

•      What calms them: a favorite song, deep pressure, a certain toy, a show, a snack

•      How they communicate: words, signs, AAC, gestures, sounds, or behavior, and what their "yes" and "no" look like

•      Hard moments: what tends to set off a meltdown, and what helps them recover

•      Your goals: the everyday challenges you most want to change, like sleep, constipation, focus, or meltdowns

The more we know before you walk in, the less your child has to navigate in the moment.

Preparing your child

Every child is different, but these often help:

•      Show them pictures. Look at photos of our office and of us on our website or social media together before the visit.

•      Use simple, honest words. "We're going to meet Dr. Nicole and Dr. Rachel. They're going to say hi, play with you, and gently check your back."

•      Make a short social story if your child likes them: arrive, play, say hi, gentle check, go home.

•      Plan the timing. Choose a time of day when your child is usually at their best. Avoid back-to-back appointments if you can.

•      Plan the after. A favorite snack, park stop, or show afterward gives the visit a predictable, happy ending.

What to bring

•      A comfort item: favorite toy, blanket, or fidget

•      Headphones, if your child uses them

•      Their AAC device or communication cards, if they use them

•      A snack and water

•      A list of current therapies, medications, and supplements

Visit 1: getting to know your child

Arriving. Our office is calm and kid-friendly, with toys and space to move. Your child can explore at their own pace. There's no rush to sit anywhere or do anything.

The conversation. We start by listening. We'll go over your intake form together and ask about your child's history, daily challenges, and what you've already tried. This is your time to share what you've been seeing, including the things other providers may have brushed off.

The gentle exam. We'll look at how your child moves, their posture, muscle tone, and how their body responds to gentle touch. If your child would rather stand, play, or sit on your lap, that's where we'll do it.

INSiGHT nervous system scans. These are quick and non-invasive. Nothing hurts, and there are no needles or loud machines. They help us see how your child's nervous system is handling stress, so we're not guessing.

Visit 2: your doctor's report

At your second visit, we sit down with you and walk through:

•      What we found in the exam and scans, in plain language

•      How those findings may connect to the everyday challenges you shared

•      Our recommendations for your child's care, and why

•      Costs and options, so there are no surprises

Then you decide what's right for your family. If you decide to move forward, your child's care can begin that same visit, so bring your child along. There's never any pressure to start.

How we adapt for sensory-sensitive and nonverbal kids

•      We go at your child's pace. If they need the whole first visit just to get comfortable with us, that's a good first visit.

•      We presume competence. We talk to your child directly and explain what we're doing, whether or not they speak.

•      We read their body. We watch for signs of stress or comfort and ask you to teach us your child's cues. If they say "no" in any way, we stop.

•      We never hold a child down. Our care is gentle, and it only works when your child feels safe.

•      You stay the whole time. You can hold your child, sit beside them, and ask questions at any point.

•      We follow your lead. You know your child best. If something isn't working, tell us and we'll adjust.

Frequently asked questions

Will my child be adjusted at the first visit? No. Visit 1 is for getting to know your child, the gentle exam, and scans. Care begins at Visit 2, after we've walked you through our findings and you've decided what's right for your family.

What if my child has a meltdown? That's okay, and we've seen plenty. We'll pause, give your child space, and follow their lead.

Can siblings come? Yes! Siblings are welcome. A familiar face can help your child feel more at ease.

Do I need a referral or a diagnosis? No referral is needed. Your child doesn't need a formal diagnosis to be seen, but if they have one, let us know on the intake form.

Do you take insurance? We don't accept insurance. HSA and FSA cards are welcome, and we'll go over all costs and options at Visit 2 before you decide anything.

I have more questions. Can I call? Yes. Call us at (619) 786-4886 and we're happy to talk them through before you book.
