Pediatric Chiropractor vs. Regular Chiropractor for Autism: What's Different? | San Diego

Pediatric Chiropractor vs. Regular Chiropractor for Autism: What's Different?

You've decided to look into chiropractic care for your child. You search "chiropractor near me" and get dozens of results. Most of them show adults on tables, sports injuries, and back pain. A few mention kids. Almost none mention autism.

Maybe you've already tried one. The chiropractor was kind, but your child melted down in the waiting room, wouldn't lie on the table, and the visit ended in tears for both of you. Or you went a few times, nothing seemed to change, and no one could tell you why.

So how do you know what's different, and what to look for?

The short answer

All chiropractors are trained to care for the spine and nervous system. But caring for an autistic child calls for specific training in pediatrics and neurodevelopment, a way to measure what's happening in a child who may not be able to describe it, techniques gentle enough for sensory-sensitive kids, and an office built around children. A neurologically focused pediatric chiropractor brings all of that together with a structured plan and regular progress checks.

What makes pediatric chiropractic at Sprout Family Chiropractic different from regular chiropractic in San Diego?

Many family chiropractors do wonderful work. This isn't about good versus bad. It's about fit: a child with autism has different needs than an adult with back pain.

Six differences that matter for autistic kids

1. Training in pediatrics and neurodevelopment

Children aren't small adults. Their spines are still developing, their nervous systems are still wiring, and their needs change from year to year. Autistic kids add another layer: sensory differences, communication differences, and nervous systems that often run on high alert.

We've completed additional training through the ICPA and PX Docs, which focus on caring for children and on the nervous system, including kids with neurodevelopmental differences. That training shapes everything from how we examine a child to how we plan their care.

2. A way to see what your child can't tell you

Many autistic kids can't describe how they feel, and some can't speak at all. Guessing isn't good enough.

We use INSiGHT scans, quick and non-invasive, to see how your child's nervous system is handling stress. Along with your child's history and a gentle exam, they give us an objective starting point and help us explain what we find in a way you can see for yourself.

3. Techniques gentle enough for sensory-sensitive kids

We use Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT), cranial work, and gentle instrument-assisted adjustments: light-touch methods with no twisting or cracking. Many adjustments use about the pressure you'd use to check a ripe tomato. For kids who don't like being touched, we start slowly and build trust first.

When it's a good fit, we also add low-level laser therapy with the Erchonia XLR8 and GVL lasers, which produce no heat, to support mitochondrial health and the body's natural healing.

4. An office built for kids

A busy, adult-focused waiting room can overwhelm a child before the visit even starts. Our office is calm and kid-friendly, with toys and space to move. We adjust kids wherever they're comfortable: on your lap, standing at a toy, or wandering the room. We never hold a child down.

5. A plan with checkpoints, not open-ended visits

Changing a nervous system takes repetition, not a single visit. Our typical plan for autistic kids starts with 3 months of care, 3 visits per week, with progress exams every 12 visits so we can track how your child is changing and adjust the plan. You'll always know where things stand.

6. Part of your child's team

We're not here to replace OT, speech, ABA, PT, or your child's doctor. We encourage families to keep every therapy that's helping. Our goal is to support the nervous system underneath them, so the rest of your child's care can work as well as it can.

And we presume competence. We talk to your child, not just about them. We explain what we're doing, and we respect their "no."

What parents tell us

Gentle pediatric care for kids with Autism in San Diego

One family who came to us for their nonverbal daughter, who has autism and trouble with focus, described the difference this way: we took time to listen, built a plan around their daughter, and included the parents' own assessment and goals. They also noted how comfortable we are with kids on the spectrum. At first their daughter was anxious and needed her mom close by. Over time she became calmer at every visit, more alert to her surroundings, and able to sit and focus for longer.

Every child is different, and results vary. We share stories like this with families' permission.

Frequently asked questions

Can any chiropractor adjust a child? All licensed chiropractors can see children. But training and experience with kids, especially autistic kids, vary a lot. It's worth asking any chiropractor about their pediatric training and how many neurodivergent kids they see.

We tried a chiropractor before and it didn't help. Why would this be different? Many families come to us after a visit that didn't fit their child. Differences in technique, environment, assessment, and planning can make a big difference for a sensory-sensitive child. We'll listen to what happened before and explain how our approach differs.

Do you only see autistic kids? No. We see babies, kids, pregnant moms, and whole families. Caring for neurodivergent kids is a major focus of our practice.

Do you take insurance? We don't accept insurance, which lets us spend our time with your child instead of on paperwork. HSA and FSA cards are welcome.

Where are you located? 8799 Balboa Ave #120 in Kearny Mesa, San Diego, central to much of the county.
